Greg’s journey started in the tiny town of Buhl, Minnesota, where he grew up in the north woods with miners and lumberjacks. He experienced a drastic change of culture in 1973, after graduating from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, when he moved from Buhl to Los Angeles to pursue his dream, since age 16, of becoming a corporate executive.
He spent the first half of his career working for big companies – GTE, Hertz and Northwest Airlines. At age 35 he was the CFO for the Western Region of Hertz Rent a Car, where he was second in command over 2,000 employees at 25 locations in the western states. At NWA he spearheaded a cost reduction initiative, while employed at their corporate headquarters.
Greg then got into the casino business, and worked as the CFO for four casinos in the Midwest and Colorado – two Indian casinos, one riverboat casino and one commercial casino. The last seven years of his career, he worked in Las Vegas as the CFO for Pacific Coast Gaming and Full House Resorts – casino management/ development companies.
In those seven years, he was involved in opening seven casinos in Washington and one in southern California, in addition to overseeing the management of five others. He hired and trained all the controllers for those properties. In total he was involved in nine startups and five turnarounds during his career.
In 2003 Greg directed a turnaround at the River Palms in Laughlin, Nevada – the subject of this book. That was his most challenging and his most rewarding job – the highlight of his career. He quit working three years later, after one more turnaround project, at the age of 56. Ten years later he decided to finish this book. He has now moved back to northern Minnesota, so it seems the circle is complete.
